This subject came up in a discussion with a client yesterday. You can reduce your total mortgage interest costs using strategies like adding an extra payment per year, or by recasting the loan, as detailed in this interesting NYT article. Click below to view. And let’s not forget our personal favorite, the 15 year home loan mortgage. A big savings in the long run over the 30 year version, if you’re planning on staying in the house to the end of the term.

This is a property acquired though foreclosure. It looks stunning. It’s on a nice stretch of the river. There are more photos of this rare opportunity to buy a foreclosed fishing lodge on the Sacramento River at the link. Representing the bank/seller on this sale is foreclosure listing agent Curt Largent of Keller Williams. He writes:

Stunning home on the Sacramento River!Home has been completely remodeled with granite, travertine tile, beamed ceilings, etc. Designed to serve as a ”Fly Fishing Lodge” with private boat dock, amazing custom pool & hot tub, full bar, locking storage, pool house, gated entry & huge outdoor fireplace.$5000 credit for professional cooking range.”

Interested? Maybe if not you, how about a group of you and your fishing buddies get together and buy this as your own private fishing club? Think about it. We can help you put that together, and we can show you and/or your fishing pals this property.

We hear much today about the new congress wanting to turn back socialized health care. But nobody is talking much about the elephant in the livingroom. You know, the socialized mortgage lending that nearly caused a nationwide depression (and may still do so). Below, the link to is an opinion piece that concisely describes our dilemma on this third rail topic. Sadly, it seems the preferred “new” alternative is simply more of what brought the economy to it’s knees. Government guarantees which privatize profits, and socialize the risks.

Investment returns depend heavily on timing

We caution most folks that homes should be looked upon as residences, not investments. Still, investors do buy real estate. And if you choose not to be a real estate investor, and instead take the widely repeated advice to buy and hold equities, you may be subject to a lot more volatility than the “common wisdom” advice implies.

We love the interactive charts of the New York Times. Nobody does them better. this one shows you just how variable your investment returns are over a 20 year time frame. The chart is a bit hard to understand at first, but once you get it, the results are fascinating. What you get depends on when you start, and when you end. Sounds logical enough, but seeing it illustrated so plainly is enlightening. Extrapolating, this insight applies to real estate investments as well. Click on the image to view. Thanks NYT.

Okay, so this one is in Red Bluff, not actually Redding. But this opportunity was brought to our attention today at our staff meeting. What a deal. If our area was a coastal town, the river would be our waterfront property. Often, just an empty lot along the river goes for half a million bucks. With this bargain you get a house and a pool for nearly half off. We understand the 1952 house needs some work, but for this price, it’s a palace. Representing the seller is my friend and colleague from Red Bluff, REALTOR Shane Budden. He writes:
“RIVER ,RIVER ,RIVER PRICE ,PRICE ,PRICE WHEW WHAT A RIVER FRONT VIEW-VIEW, VIEW !!! 3000+ SF SPACIOUS RIVERFRONT HOME WITH ALMOST AN ENTIRE WALL OF WINDOWS !!! THEY DON’T LET YOU PUT THIS MANY WINDOWS IN A HOUSE ANYMORE !!! DOCK & RIVERFRONT DECK!!! ALSO COOL POOL, OUTBUILDINGS GALORE, & OFFICE. HOME PARTIAL BUILT BY RUDY RAPP WITH BULLNOSE CORNERS, THIS IS A GREAT FAMILY HOME CALL FOR VIEWING.”
Yeah, I’d be yelling too. IN FACT, LET”S JUST DO THAT. WANT TO KNOW MORE? CALL:

Wow, if we saw that, we’d take a picture too. We’ve selected this home for sale to post just because we like the picture of the backyard view. Was there also a booming voice speaking to the photographer that caused him to point his camera skyward? We may never know. But we do know you might be able to buy this house beneath this miraculous sky. It’s a Short Sale, which is to say that it’s being offered for sale for less than what is owed on it. The hope is that the bank/lender will take less than what they are owed knowing that the foreclosure process may be ultimately more costly. They don’t always work out, but we are willing to help you give this one a try if you simply must live where banded rays of light soar overhead. This one is listed by Chad Phillips of Coldwell Banker. He writes of it:

“Located in a desirable neighborhood near Simpson University, Bethel church & Shasta College this home offers an open kitchen with breakfast bar and a separate sunny dining area & large great room. Sliding glass doors lead to a spacious backyard that offers spectacular views beautiful Shasta Bally mountain. Newer roof and fence. This well maintained home is a must see!”

“Spectacular Views” indeed. We can’t promise an accompanying choir of angels, but there are more photos of this Redding Short Sale home at the link. Call us if you want to bear witness to this heavenly majesty for yourself. And perhaps experience the house too.

Real estate is inextricably entwined with population. This National Geographic video features illustrative graphics which put our planetary population in perspective. Worth a view.
